Cinema மினிமா's Movie Review on 'Sonna Puriyathu'

Cast: Shiva, Vasundhara Kashyap, Manobala, Vatsala Rajagopal, Meera Krishnan
Cinematography: Saravanan
Music: Yatish Mahadev
Written and Directed by: Krishnan Jayaraj

Shiva is known for his comical spoof entertainers, which he used to give in almost all his movies. The first look and the trailers of the movie indicated that it is gonna be a fun riot. Lets see, whether the movie has really served the expectations.

Cast and Crew:
Shiva gets yet another role of a comical guy. We see the usual shiva in the screen. He just tries to make the audience laugh in all the scenes he appears. But the sad part is, he is not able to entertain fully. People get irritated as he repeats his same flow every time. His pair Vasundhara Kashyap looks good in few scenes and looks 'ppaaahhh' in few scenes. Her lip sync also does not match in few scenes. Vatsala Rajagopal who comes as Shiva's Ipad grandmother, does a calm and neat job of keeping the audience entertained with her Facebook jokes.

The rest other crew including Manobala, Meera Krishnan and blade shankar & co., also contribute their part fair enough. The audience erupt during the entry of 'Idea star' Sam Anderson. But that too does not last for more time.

Music and Cinematography:
Songs are worst to the core. Debudant Yatish Mahadev should have done the proceeding with the songs, much more better. His BGM is neat and good. Cinematography is done by yet another debudant saravanan. He does a neat job with the camera angles, though there is not a much scope for camera.

Story, Screenplay and Direction:
There is no strong story line. The screenplay is also too slow. I heard people asking for an 'Interval' in the first half, as the movie was progressing. Debudant Krishnan Jayaraj should have taken care of this. Dialogues written by him also does not make the audience to smile, which this movie is basically meant for. He needs to take care of things in future to save his guru C.S.Amudhan's ['Tamizh padam' fame] name.

Overall, this is a comedy entertainer that loses its track totally and ends up in just giving something that is not at all needed for the audience.

Verdict - 4.25/10 [சொன்னா புரியாது.. கடைசி வரைக்கும் ஒண்ணுமே புரியாது]

Cinema மினிமா's Movie Review on 'Pattathu Yaanai'

Cast: Vishaal, Aishwarya Arjun, Jagan, Santhanam, John Vijay, Ajay, Murali Sharma
Cinematography: Vaithy
Music: S.S.Thaman
Written and Directed by: G.Boopathy Pandian

Director Boopathy Pandian has always been known for his commercial entertainers. And Pattathu yaanai is yet another commercial masala film featuring Vishal and Aishwarya Arjun alongside with a long cast. Lets see what this masala flick is upto.

Cast and Crew:
Vishal who did a very different role in his previous movie - 'SAMAR', Is yet again back to his usual Masala flicks. He plays a role of a cook in this movie. This movie features all the elements that vishal demands for his movies - songs, fight and comedies. I dunno why vishal still demands such kind of role. He hits 100 persons at a time literally without a weapon. May be he would have thought that, It is something a mass hero demands. But it creates irritation for everyone in theater. Surely after seeing such fights, I could see a 'BALAKRISHNA' in the making in TamilNadu.

Aishwarya Arjun has made her debut venture in this movie. Her Make-up is a bit too high in all the scenes, which makes people feel, 'ppppaaahhh'. She has a lot to work with her expressions. 'Comedy super star' Santhanam is the only person, who holds the movie for quite a few time. He is a supported by Jagan and co., who come alongside as Vishaal's friends. The protagonists- Murali Sharma ['Dhoni' fame] , Ajay and John Vijay do not have a great role other than getting hit in the hands of the hero, which has been the usual cinematic result.

Cinematography and Music:
Cinematography is being done by Vaithy. He has not got a great scope for cinematography. Still he does a neat job. Music by S.S.Thaman does not appeal much. His songs are too bad. Still he has to improve a lot in making the audience entertained with his songs. But his BGM making skills saves him. S.S.Thaman was highly expected when he did 'Eeram'. But, after that, all his songs are not up-to the mark. Lets expects something like 'Eeram' in his upcoming flicks atleast.

Direction:
As like mentioned previously by me, Boopathy Pandian is known for his comedy entertainers like 'Devathaiyai Kanden','Thiruvilayadal Aarambam' and 'Malai Kottai'. His Story and screenplay might have appealed the audience during 2004-2007. But, not at all now. That too, when he expects his hero to hit 100 person in a row, speak punch dialogues and want villains to do some comedies, It would certainly bore people. So, If he wishes to continue his screenplay like this in another movie, then for sure, he will be out of race in this Industry.

Questions to the Director:
These questions are not only to Boopathy Pandian, but also to all other cine directors:
--> Why can't commercial movies made without santhanam? And has anyone got the guts to make a comic movie other than santhanam and make it a huge hit?
--> When there is a lots of good stuffs in Madurai, Why do u always show it as like a city of Rowdyism?

Vishal has to choose acting in some good movies, like he did in, 'sanda kozhi','Thamirabarani','Avan Ivan' and 'Samar'. Else, If he continues to do such kind of roles alone, he will be lost nowhere very sooner. Very frustrating indeed from Boopathy Pandian and Co.,

Verdict: 3.75/10 [Malaikottai + Thimiru = Pattathu Yaanai]

Cinema மினிமா's Movie Review on 'Mariyaan'

Cast: Dhanush, Parvathy Menon, Appu Kutty, Jagan, Uma Riyaz Khan
Cinematography: Marc Koninkx
Music: A.R.Rahman
Screenplay: Bharat Bala, Sriram Rajan
Dialogues: Joe. D.Cruz
Story and Direction: Bharat Bala

Dhanush and A.R.Rahman joining hands for the second time on the trot with their leader being Director Bharat Bala. Initially there was not much of the speculation going on about this film. But the expectation meter geared up as subsequent teaser were released with Dhanush being depicted as deep diver and then sporting for his life with a leopard etc., This movie was also re-recorded with Auro-3d format and hence speculation went higher over this movie. Lets see whether the makers have stayed with all the expectations they have created.

Mariyaan is a emotional journey of a common man, who goes to Sudan, gets trapped in the hands of terrorists and returns back for his love. All the characters ranging from Dhanush, Parvathy menon, Appu Kutty, Imman Annachi, Jagan, Uma Riyaz khan etc., have done some extra-ordinary performance in this movie. The entire technical team of this movie have put in a commanding effort. I would like to depict all of their performances individually.

Dhanush and Parvathy Menon:
Dhanush as 'Mariyaan' is the pillar of this movie. He has taken the entire movie over his shoulders and has also put some marvellous effort for it. The place where he starts as a industrial worker in Sudan, then as a deep diver in Kanyakumari and again as a hostage in Sudan, he has just transformed his acting skills to a great extent. Oh my god!! That is really stunning. The way he depicts his love, anger, fear, pain, agony and hunger in his face expression are all quite brilliant. He should be ready to receive lots of accolades for it.

Parvathy Menon is certainly a best pick for this movie. She scores in every areas, where she expresses her love, desperation during Dhanush's departure, longing for Dhanush's arrival are all so brilliant. The wait after her maiden venture, 'POO' has payed a great reward to her in this movie. She will really be the next generation actress, If she contiues doing such kind of stuffs again.

Other Crew:
Appu Kutty as sakkarai [Dhanush's friend in Kanyakumari] and Jagan as [Dhanush's friend in Sudan] have a short and a neat role here. Imman Annachi who also comes as Dhanush's counterpart in Kanyakumari is also a best pick. His natural Nellai slang adds value to his presence. Uma Riyaz Khan as Dhanush's mother is also one to be noted in this movie. Her acting skills have expended in this movie and I bet most of you would not recognize her, Just by seeing her initially. The final scenes when she cries to Parvathy menon, 'என்னோட பாசம் அவன திரும்ப கூட்டிட்டு வருமோ இல்லையோ, நீ அவன் மேல வெச்சிருக்கிற காதல் அவன கண்டிப்பா கூட்டிட்டு வரும்' is really touching.

Cinematography and Music:
Cinematography is done by Marc Koninkx. His camera just revloves around every nook and corners. His crystal clear shots in when Dhanush hunts a fish in deep water just with his dagger, the wide spread shot in the deserts of Sudan and the shot with cheetah are all mind blowing. Music by A.R.Rahman is yet another diamond to this movie, which adds the beauty to the crown. The BGM and songs are all wonderful. Marc Koninkx's camera and A.R.Rahman's music gives everyone a big treat in 'Sonapareeya','Innum konja Neram' and 'Nenje Ezhu'.

Direction, Dialogues and Screenplay:
The Dialogues penned by Joe.D.Cruz are quite good. My question to Bharat Bala is, 'Where have you been this much days?'. He has depicted every emotions - emotions of lovers, emotions of a hostage, emotions of a mother etc., quite brilliantly. He just make everyone emotional while showing the scenes where Indian fishermen being shot by Srilankan coast guard. He is one fine and fantastic film maker, who our Tamil Cine Industry needed. Kudos sir!!!

Negatives:
I found two Negatives in this movie. One is, the slow Narration of the script which also has not much of an effect indeed. The other one is that the makers could have avoided the smoking scenes they have kept. There are too many of these.

We always love to watch some fantasy movies taken by Hollywood makers. And this movie is one such which certainly succeeds in impressing in all the aspects. A great Salute to the entire cast and crew for taking Tamil cinema to some world standard with such a fabulous product.

RATING - 8/10 [Definetely a must-watch flick]

Cinema மினிமா's Movie Review on 'Singam-2'

Cast: Surya, Santhanam, Vivek, Anushka, Hansika Motwani
Cinematography: Priyan
Editing: V.T.Vijayan
Music: Devi Sri Prasad
Written and Directed by: Hari

The team that roared during the success of 'Singam' comes back again in its sequel 'Singam-2', where Surya and Director Hari join their Hands for the fourth time. This has certainly created much anticipation and lots of expectation over this movie. Does the movie live upto its expectations??

Durai Singam is back into action of destroying the sea smuglers. Surya as Durai Singam has cameback with double energy and double action than what he showed in 'Singam'. The same cast in 'Singam' [Vivek, Anushka, Radha Ravi, Nasser] repeats in 'Singam-2' with the addition of Santhanam, Rahman and two other villains. Anushka is just used for her Skinny dance and Hansika plays a short and sweet role. [இத்தன பேர் இந்த படத்துல தேவையா Director Hari அவர்களே???]

Vivek and Santhanam puts up much effort in making the audience engaged with the movie. Their comedies are so enjoyable. Surya, Vivek and Santhanam are the backbone of this film. Villains Mukesh Rishi and the African Guy are needless extra additions to the film. [Surya சார்.. நீங்க Backboneங்கிறதால படம் முழுக்க backdropla கத்திகிட்டேவா இருப்பீங்க???]

The songs are too bad to hear so as the Background Music. Devi Sri Prasad just makes the BGM that is loved by Andhra Fans. Tamil Cine Fans really hate this loud BGM. [சார் உங்க கைல DRUMS  இருக்குங்கறதால இவ்ளோ sound ah அடிச்சு காத கிழிப்பீங்களா??]

First half of the movie was quite good to watch. But the second half was watching a movie in fast forward action. Seeing the movie, what I thought was, Director hari has prepared a lengthy script and has tried to fit them all into 168 minutes, which has ended up making the screenplay much faster and unfinished. This reflects in cinematography and editing too. The top angles shots and close up shots all go in vain due to the fast paced screenplay and editing. Cinematographer Priyan and Editor V.T.Vijayan's work goes in vain. Few stunts are unbelievable and are out of trend too. [இன்னும் எத்தன நாள் தான் கயிறு கட்டியே பறந்து பறந்து அடிப்பீங்க??]

There are lots of unanswered questions in the movie:
--> How can a Indian cop arrest and bring back a criminal of South Africa in South Africa even after the mission gets cancelled?
--> What happened to Rahman atlast?
--> It was pretty much clear in First part of singam that Anushka and surya got married at the end. But how come they show Surya and Anushka didnt get married in 'Singam 2'??

Positives:
--> Surya
--> Santhanam
--> Vivek

Negatives:
--> Screenplay with over dosage
--> Loud BGM
--> Lengthy Script

Though Singam-2 has got ingredients to serve a great treat to the audience, the over dosage of screenplay has made the movie to fail in giving the magic that which 'Singam' did in 2010.

RATING - 5.5 / 10 [Restricted to Surya Fans alone]

Cinema மினிமா's Movie Review on 'Raanjhana'

Cast: Dhanush, Sonam kapoor, Abhay Deol
Cinematography: Nataraj Subramanian, Vishal Sinha
Music: A.R.Rahman
Writted by: Himanshu Sharma
Directed by: Anand.L.Rai

Dhanush's maiden innings in bollywood, pairing up with sonam kapoor and also with the likes of cinematographer Nataraj Subramanian and Music Director was so much expected expecially by the tollywood fans. Has the film lived up to its expectation??? Lets find out.

Raanjhanaa is certainly a cute love story. Dhanush perfectly fits into the role of Kundan, the son of a tamil priest. Many had doubted initially how Dhanush could fit in a bollywood movie. But Dhanush breaks everyones words with his awesome acting. He really make many people to cry during the final parts of the movie. Kudos to him. [சும்மா கலக்கிட்ட சித்தப்பு...]

Sonam Kapoor looks like a cute doll. She has certainly lived as Zoya, a muslim girl. She is so cute in her expressions. Abhay Deol who come in as Sonam Kapoor's Boy Friend has also done justice to his role.

Nataraj Subramaniam and Vishal Sinha have worked pretty good with their cameras. Right from the Dusserah scenes in kasi till the scenes in New Delhi, everthing have been shot so perfectly. Editing done by hemal kotari is also fantastic. Songs by A.R.R are mind boggling. BGM is also so perfectly tuned.

Director Anand.L.Rai has done a great work in his second film. The way he depicts dhanush as a guy with tamil accent and partially hindi, the communal differences and the political interventions are so brilliant. Kudos to him. Script written by Himanshu Sharma, is really so touching. It’s rare to see a film stay true to its story with such conviction.

Positives:
  • Dhanush's Fantabulous performance
  • Sonam Kapoor
  • Brilliant script and Direction by Himanshu Sharma and Anand.L.Rai
 Negatives:
  • The slow pace of the movie in second half [Un avoidable]
  • A slight resemblance like his previous movie '3'
Even these negatives won't affect the flow of the story. Whenever people criticize Dhanush, he replies back with his awesome performance and this is one such. And certainly this movie is not restricted to lovers alone. Great work by the entire 'Raanjhanaa' team for kindling the audience with mixed emotions.

RATING-7.25/10 [சும்மா நச்சுனு இருக்கு]

Cinema மினிமா's Movie Review on 'Thillu Mullu'

Cast: 'Mirchi' Shiva, Isha Talwar, Prakash Raj, Kovai Sarala, Manobala, Santhanam [Cameo]
Music: Yuvan Shankar Raja
Cinematography: Lakshmanan
Direction and Screenplay: Badree

'Mirchi' Shiva, who is always known for delivering the necessary timing comedy which the audience expects, Joining with the legendary actor Prakash Raj that too in the remake of well renowned 'Super star' Rajinikanth's Thillu Mullu, had a decent expectation from the audience. Lets see whether its worth the hype.

'Mirchi' Shiva has done a great job as Pasupathy and Kandhan Ganguly and also fits very much accurately for both the roles. He introduces with a pen name 'அகில உலக Super Star' and he also makes the audience to laugh till the end of the movie. Prakash Raj delivers his as usual goods. Debudant, Isha Talwar comes with lots of make up and struggles with her expressions. [யப்பா உங்களுக்கு வேற ஹீரோயினே கிடைக்கலயா??]

Sathyan comes in for very few scenes who is not at all needed for the story is concerned about. Kovai Sarala and Manobala also have a small role to do. They do justice to their roles by providing grand entertainment.

Yuvan shankar Raja shows his class in 'Thillu Mullu', 'Kaipesi' and 'Ragangal 16' songs. He could have taken care of the Background ground score. Cinematographer Lakshmanan does a good job with his camera. Editors Praveen and Srikanth should have commited lots of blunders in many scenes. [Eg: சென்னைல நடக்குற IPL மேட்ச்ல மும்பை stadium ah காட்டுறது]. There are lots of places where the lip sync does not match for the heroine.

Positives:
  • Mirchi Shiva
  • Prakash Raj
  • Kovai Sarala
Negatives:

There are lots of negatives. Still a few to be listed are:
  • Isha Talwar
  • Logicless Screenplay
  • Dragging Climax
  • Unwanted Songs
Director Badree should improvise his screeplay making skills, that too while making remake films, to come up as a great director. Though this is not a bad attempt with screenplay, comparing its original 'Thillu Mullu' that got released in 1981, the newer version is just below the par level.

RATING - 4 /10 [Definetely Not worth the hype]

Cinema மினிமா's Movie Review on 'Theeya Vaelai Seiyanum Kumaaru'

Cast: Siddharth, Santhanam, Hansika Motwani, Ganesh Venkatram, RJ Balaji
Music: Sathya
Cinematography: Gopi Amarnath
Written By: Sundar.C, Venkat, Nalan Kumarasamy
Directed By: Sundar.C

After a commanding success in 'Kalakalappu', the same duo - Sundar.C and UTV motion pictures join together as the expectation meter peaks up with additions like Siddharth and Hansika in this movie. Have they all satisfied the expectation peaked up???

Theeya Vaelai Seiyanum Kumaaru [TVSK] is a tale of a guy who hates girls and love initially and atlast learns to love very successfully. Siddharth purely fits in to the role of a IT guy with innocence at the first and charmness towards the latter part of the movie. Hansika looks so lovely. She also fits in to the role of an IT employee perfectly. Ganesh Venkatram looks like a fit police officer and he does not fit into the role of lover boy. [ஸார், உங்கலுக்கு லவ் செட் ஆகும். ஆனா லவ்வர் பாய் வேஷம் செட் ஆகாதுங்கோ]

RJ Balaji who comes as Siddharth's friend and Santhanam who comes a 'Love Master' gives more entertainment to the audience out of which santhanam wins the race as usual. RJ Balaji should restrict his skills inside radio box alone, as his jokes does not become appealing in bigger screen, that too alongside with santhanam. [யப்பா RJ Balaji, உங்க மொக்கை இங்க எடுபடல]

Music Director Sathya of 'Engaeyum Eppothum' fame, does a neat job. 'Azhagendral avaldhana' and 'Lovukku yessu sonnale' are the picks of the movie. BGM is also neat and appealing. There is not much scope for cinematography in this movie. Still, Gopi Amarnath does a neat job. Editing by Praveen K.L and N.B.Srikanth could have been better.

The movie screenplay has a lots of resemblances to director sundar.c's previous movie 'Kalakalappu' and his few other old movies and hence, does not feel so fresh. Director Sundar.C should have taken care of this. Though the Screenplay lacks the freshness, the dialogues by Nalan Kumarasamy and Venkat holds the movie and makes the audience not to feel boring till the end of the movie. The climax also does not have a strong finish as people doesnt know whether the hero and heroine join together or not. We can just assume that Siddharth and Hasika Joins atlast.

Positives:
  • Siddharth's Innocence and Charmness
  • Santhanam's Flawless comedy
  • Dialogues by Nalan Kumarasamy and Venkat
Negatives:
  •  Lack of freshness in the screenplay
  •  Ganesh Venkatram's depiction as Lover Boy
  •  Interest made in first half gets faded out in Second half
  •  Logicless scenes
Director Sundar.C should start thinking out of the box as the samething can't be liked by the audience again and again. Though the movie isn't boring, It does not give the enjoyment as like his previous movie 'Kalakalappu' gave. இன்னும் தீயா வேலை செய்திருக்கனும் Director சுந்தர்.C அவர்களே....

RATING - 5.5/10 [ஓருக்க பாக்கலாம் பாஸ்ஸ்]
