Cinema மினிமா's Movie Review on 'Mariyaan'

Cast: Dhanush, Parvathy Menon, Appu Kutty, Jagan, Uma Riyaz Khan
Cinematography: Marc Koninkx
Music: A.R.Rahman
Screenplay: Bharat Bala, Sriram Rajan
Dialogues: Joe. D.Cruz
Story and Direction: Bharat Bala

Dhanush and A.R.Rahman joining hands for the second time on the trot with their leader being Director Bharat Bala. Initially there was not much of the speculation going on about this film. But the expectation meter geared up as subsequent teaser were released with Dhanush being depicted as deep diver and then sporting for his life with a leopard etc., This movie was also re-recorded with Auro-3d format and hence speculation went higher over this movie. Lets see whether the makers have stayed with all the expectations they have created.

Mariyaan is a emotional journey of a common man, who goes to Sudan, gets trapped in the hands of terrorists and returns back for his love. All the characters ranging from Dhanush, Parvathy menon, Appu Kutty, Imman Annachi, Jagan, Uma Riyaz khan etc., have done some extra-ordinary performance in this movie. The entire technical team of this movie have put in a commanding effort. I would like to depict all of their performances individually.

Dhanush and Parvathy Menon:
Dhanush as 'Mariyaan' is the pillar of this movie. He has taken the entire movie over his shoulders and has also put some marvellous effort for it. The place where he starts as a industrial worker in Sudan, then as a deep diver in Kanyakumari and again as a hostage in Sudan, he has just transformed his acting skills to a great extent. Oh my god!! That is really stunning. The way he depicts his love, anger, fear, pain, agony and hunger in his face expression are all quite brilliant. He should be ready to receive lots of accolades for it.

Parvathy Menon is certainly a best pick for this movie. She scores in every areas, where she expresses her love, desperation during Dhanush's departure, longing for Dhanush's arrival are all so brilliant. The wait after her maiden venture, 'POO' has payed a great reward to her in this movie. She will really be the next generation actress, If she contiues doing such kind of stuffs again.

Other Crew:
Appu Kutty as sakkarai [Dhanush's friend in Kanyakumari] and Jagan as [Dhanush's friend in Sudan] have a short and a neat role here. Imman Annachi who also comes as Dhanush's counterpart in Kanyakumari is also a best pick. His natural Nellai slang adds value to his presence. Uma Riyaz Khan as Dhanush's mother is also one to be noted in this movie. Her acting skills have expended in this movie and I bet most of you would not recognize her, Just by seeing her initially. The final scenes when she cries to Parvathy menon, 'என்னோட பாசம் அவன திரும்ப கூட்டிட்டு வருமோ இல்லையோ, நீ அவன் மேல வெச்சிருக்கிற காதல் அவன கண்டிப்பா கூட்டிட்டு வரும்' is really touching.

Cinematography and Music:
Cinematography is done by Marc Koninkx. His camera just revloves around every nook and corners. His crystal clear shots in when Dhanush hunts a fish in deep water just with his dagger, the wide spread shot in the deserts of Sudan and the shot with cheetah are all mind blowing. Music by A.R.Rahman is yet another diamond to this movie, which adds the beauty to the crown. The BGM and songs are all wonderful. Marc Koninkx's camera and A.R.Rahman's music gives everyone a big treat in 'Sonapareeya','Innum konja Neram' and 'Nenje Ezhu'.

Direction, Dialogues and Screenplay:
The Dialogues penned by Joe.D.Cruz are quite good. My question to Bharat Bala is, 'Where have you been this much days?'. He has depicted every emotions - emotions of lovers, emotions of a hostage, emotions of a mother etc., quite brilliantly. He just make everyone emotional while showing the scenes where Indian fishermen being shot by Srilankan coast guard. He is one fine and fantastic film maker, who our Tamil Cine Industry needed. Kudos sir!!!

Negatives:
I found two Negatives in this movie. One is, the slow Narration of the script which also has not much of an effect indeed. The other one is that the makers could have avoided the smoking scenes they have kept. There are too many of these.

We always love to watch some fantasy movies taken by Hollywood makers. And this movie is one such which certainly succeeds in impressing in all the aspects. A great Salute to the entire cast and crew for taking Tamil cinema to some world standard with such a fabulous product.

RATING - 8/10 [Definetely a must-watch flick]
